When are limited company accounts due?
Every limited company has to do this. Every year. Even if it made nothing.
Two filings, once a year, whether you traded a lot, a little, or not at all. Accounts go to Companies House. A Company Tax Return goes to HMRC. Together, that's your "year-end".
Late filing penalties for company accounts and your CT600
The fines start the next day. They don't stop.
These are the penalties GOV.UK publishes, for a typical private company. The HMRC amounts are for returns with a filing date on or after 1 April 2026.
Filed your accounts but not your CT600?
Filing your accounts does not file your tax return.
Annual accounts go to Companies House. The Company Tax Return (CT600) goes to HMRC, separately, with the tax computation and a copy of the accounts. Many directors file their accounts, often themselves, and assume they are done.
HMRC's free online CT600 service closed on 31 March 2026, so there is no free HMRC route now. You need commercial software. We prepare and file just the CT600 for £39.
How AccountsAI prepares your accounts like an accountant would
From bank statement to filed. The steps an accountant would take.
Behind a year-end is a long list of real work, done in a set order. You don't need the jargon. Follow one example company's data down the line, then look up any word you've been nodding along to.
What it does automatically
- Pulls your company details, accounting period and deadlines from Companies House.
- Reads last year's filed accounts from Companies House for your opening balances.
- Reads the CSV export from any UK bank and maps the columns itself.
- Categorises every transaction, and asks only about the ones your bank data can't explain.
- Reads documents from your previous accountant (PDF, images or Excel), such as last year's accounts, tax computation or trial balance.
- Fills in the filing form from Companies House data.
- Checks everything against HMRC's validation rules before anything is sent.
Every row of your bank statement
Hundreds of lines, none typed by you.
Into the right headings
Sales, software, rent, wages. The nominal ledger.
Money that belongs to another year
The year-end adjustments an accountant makes.
A trial balance that balances
Debits equal credits, or it's found before you see it.
Profit and loss, balance sheet
Micro-entity accounts, FRS 105.
Tax worked out, tagged, checked
Official iXBRL, run through HMRC's validation rules.
The jargon buster.
Accountant-speak on the left of every tile. Plain English underneath.
A bill for this year that you only pay next year. It still counts as a cost this year.
A customer paid you in March for a job in April. That money is next year's income, not this year's.
A running tally of what you owe the company, or it owes you. Paid for something personally? It owes you.
Every figure is recorded twice: where the money came from, and where it went. If the two sides don't match, something is wrong.
A laptop lasts years. The tax rules let the company claim an allowance against it. Example: 1,450.00.
This year starts exactly where last year ended. Read from your filed accounts at Companies House.
The master list of headings every payment gets filed under. Sales, software, rent, wages.
19% on profits up to £50,000 and 25% above £250,000. In between, the rate slides.
The official digital format. Every figure in your accounts is tagged so HMRC and Companies House can read it, then checked against HMRC's validation rules before anything is sent.
Upload their files and it reads them. Same approach, easy switch.
Filing company accounts online: three steps
Download the CSV from your online banking and drop it in. No bank login to hand over.
A handful of questions your bank data can't answer. One tap each.
Look it over and sign off as director. One sign-off sends both filings.
Five steps. No emails to chase.
Company accounts you can check before you sign
Shows its working.
You're signing your company's accounts, so you should be able to check them. Review every figure before you sign, and ask the AI where any of them came from.
A real accountant reviews your company accounts, when you want one.
A qualified accountant joins the conversation. They can ask the AI why it did something, and they sign off before anything is filed.
What's included: annual accounts, CT600 and tax computation
Then you get the receipts.
Both filings come back with an acceptance confirmation. Here's what they look like, for a fictional company. These are examples, not real filings.
